Need to make a will? What to consider

Posted on

A will lets you say how you want your property dealt with when you die. As far as your family are concerned, it could be the most important paper you ever sign.

A will can relieve financial and emotional strain on your family after your death and ensure your loved ones are taken care of.

There are a number of things you need to take into consideration when you need to make a will, especially when you have children and grandchildren.

  • Guardianship
If you have children, you need to make sure they get the best care possible. You can do this by appointing guardians who you trust.
In case your proposed guardians cannot for whatever reason undertake this responsibility, you should record substitute guardians to cover this situation.

  • Maintenance and education
You should ensure that your children or other members of family are provided for financially. Your will contains instructions on how you want your dependents to be looked after.

  • What if my children die before me?
In the unfortunate event any of your loved ones pass away before you, you can avoid any confusion regarding the distribution of your estate by adding in substitutes. This will ensure that your estate will in all circumstances, be distributed the way you want it to be.

These are a few important matters you need to take into account when making your will.

Running the risk and not keeping it up to date can often lead to your assets being distributed to people or in a manner to which you would not have approved.

Ensure your family’s future and keep your will updated.
